Lifestyle Changes To Control Heartburn
Author: Shelly Bray
Not everyone is affected by acid reflux in the same way. A certain individual may get very painful attacks for the slightest reason. Another person might have a very mild disorder that only reacts to very specific situations. Because the disease is so different from person to person, finding the right acid reflux treatment for your own disorder can be a little bit of a challenge. The fact is, though, that this condition is definitely treatable, and most of the treatments are quite straightforward. In this article we will talk about some of the treatments that you can use to control your acid reflux disorder.
For the most part, basic lifestyle changes are all that are needed to keep your acid reflux in check. As far as acid reflux treatments go, these are the least invasive and the easiest to adopt. Sometimes, all you need are a few diet changes and some basic exercises, to get back to a normal life. You and your doctor will work to reduce your stress levels, adjust your diet and make sure you get enough sleep and exercise every day. You may find that you don't need medication if these changes work for you.
Antacids can be an effective acid reflux treatment in many cases. Antacids can also be very harmful. Many antacids are high in calcium, and this can cause an inflammation of the stomach for some people. For others the calcium helps to absorb the extra acid and stop an attack in its tracks. You also have the option of choosing an antacid that does not contain high levels of calcium. The advantage of antacids is that you can buy them easily and they don't cost much.
For some people, acid reflux is not a problem with stomach acid or a malfunctioning sphincter. For some people they have acid reflux because their organs have gotten shifted internally and the top of the stomach has been moved up above the diaphragm. This is causes an extreme form of acid reflux disorder and, often, can only be corrected through surgery. Few who suffer from acid reflux will need surgery to treat their symptoms, there for this is a very last resort option. Extensive testing is required before this can be a viable solution for you. So take your time looking for other options. The condition of acid reflux does not have to be complicated. For the most part it is totally manageable through lifestyle changes and simple over the counter remedies. Even though a few require medication or even surgery, most people have few issues with the disorder once they have discovered the right treatment for them. As always work with your doctor to find that perfect plan for you. Working in tandem with your doctor, you will quickly find the right solution and get back to a normal life.

I’ve been taking Nexium for almost a month now and it’s really helped me.
I’ve been given reflux medicine to take for 2 week periods before, but I’ve been told by a new doctor I’m seeing it takes atleast 8 weeks to be really effective.
So whatever you choose, keeping taking it for atleast a couple of months and see how you are doing. You may need to keep taking them to keep your reflux under control.
Your esophogus may be eroding so much and closing. You might want to have an endoscopy done where they will insert a tube in through your mouth and down to your stomach. If your esophogus is closing, they will be able to push it back out. I have about the same problems and take almost the same meds & I too am not even close to being overweight and I’m only 24! After my procedure, I also have Gastritis.
Oh honey, I feel for you. I used to have terrible, terrible problems with my stomach. I’ve had every -oscopy you can imagine to check it out!
These are all good tips. I agree with getting Prilosec or Prevacid over the counter. Often those are prescribed by docs. Know, though, that they can take a couple days to work b/c they function differently than an antacid. I would take Tums or Maalox in the meantime.
Drink lots of cool water. It is good for your tummy. But not toooo cold, that can send your system into spasms.
Ginger or black licorice, strangely enough, work well to soothe heartburn. Also, chamomile tea.
Avoid dairy, citrus products, and rich foods, including red meat.
Eat bland foods until you can get in to see your doctor. And starchy foods, like potatoes or bread. They do well to “soak up” the acid.
Good luck, you poor thing. I know how it feels!
The estrogens in contraceptive tablets can cause nausea.
With the acid reflux you have the symptoms will be exagerrated.
So you have to continue taking the drugs for the acid reflux.
Depo injections of progesterones can cause tummy aches.
Implanted Implanon does not produce gastro intestinal side effects.
I am not a doctor, so either way you will want to talk to them, but this is what I have to say as a long time sufferer of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.)!
Three part answer: information, what not to do, and what to do!
INFORMATION!!!!!!
I have a very severe case of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.). I have had to go to the hospital for some of the heartburn that I have had because the pain can become overwhelming or your breathing can be effected. It can be caused by Smoking, Drinking Beverages with caffeine (My case with hereditary), Drinking Beverages with Alcohol, Stress, Anxiety or can be Hereditary
The good thing about G.E.R.D. is that it can be a temporary thing and can be cured. It is never a permit thing even if you end up with it for the rest of your life it has the ability to be cured.
G.E.R.D. is caused by too much acid being created in your stomach. This can lead to or cause ulcers, esophagus damage, heartburn and/or damage in the mouth. . Other symptoms that can be found in a few cases are dizziness, tingling in limbs, numbness of Limbs, Chest/Back pain focused on the left side (in most cases), and shortness/difficulty breathing.
WHAT NOT TO DO!!!!!!!!
In most cases, stress is a factor to the reflux if you watch what you eat and reduce some of the stress it will help. If you watch what you eat for about a week you should find relief, if you do not then that is when you definitely what to listen to the doctor. Things to watch for are as follows:
Fatty Foods
Citrus Foods
Foods That Contain Grease
Fried Foods
Chocolate (including any Coco)
Caffeine
Smoking
Alcohol
Tomato Based Products
Lactose
Roughage (Berries and Nuts)
Onions
WHAT TO DO!!!!
The two foods that I recommend is Black strap Molasses and Raw honey. The apple is better for night time reflux while these will work for just about all of it. What you will do is take about a tsp. of whatever one you chose. Molasses being the better because of strength and nutrition, but must be use to the taste. What the substance will do is stick to the sides of the esophagus and do two things, one is heal and the other is protect.
On the healing end, both substances have a healing property in them, and as they sit on the walls of the esophagus they will heal it. This is also helpful if you have a sore throat in the morning from refluxing.
On the protection end, both substances are high in sugar and when acid that is refluxed comes up to that the sugar will neutralize it and it will not longer be a problem at that point.
I would also look to putting Cinnamon and Ginger in you diet, they have been know to help with digestion and will help you reduce the amount of acid needed to brake down food, therefore causing you to reflux less.
What’s the best way to control acid reflux at home.I can’t get in to see the doctor for 4 days.I am miserable!
help me with my out of control acid reflux please?
I was diagnosis with Gerd a few years ago. I take Nexium 40 mg twice a day, Regalin 3 times a day and Carafate liquid.
Why am I still suffering? I don’t eat the fun foods that I love, I drink one cup, if that of Simply Smooth coffee in the am…. I still have a terrible choking feeling in my throat, I am still coughing acid.
It’s really driving me crazy… I am losing weight to help, I have a little tummy, but I am not obese… I mean I see huge people pack away stuff and never suffer… why me? What can do? Any home remedies out there that are tried and true?

How to control acid reflux…?
I went to the doctor on Valentine’s day with chest pains I’d been having for a week. She said its acid reflux and gave me Nexium for 15 days. It all seemed offset by a drink I had at dinner. She told me no alcohol until we figure out how to control it. I don’t have to go back for 3 months, and I can’t afford to go back just to hear her tell me how to control it. So, does anyone know how to avoid it acting up? Like I said, mine seems offset by alcohol. Although I can avoid alcohol, I don’t like being restricted to it either. Can anyone suggest anything? She mentioned Pepcid AC and Zantac 75, but only breifly.
I had blood tests back in September for something else. I’m guessing anemia would have shown up somewhere there I guess. I know alcohol brings it about because out of curiosity I drank a wine cooler and the initial neck pain started but went away I guess because of the Nexium. So can Prilosec control it? Is that over the counter?
Food has never brought it about. The food has only made me feel worse once it came about. I’m avoiding all of those things, but my question is for OTC meds that can help me control it so I’m not so restricted to what I consume.
I have been to a doctor. My reflux is different…there’s no burning, only neck and chest pain. I do not have insurance, and my doctor didn’t act like it was much of a problem. I have never even experienced this problem until I turned 21 (Feb. 5th) and had a drink with dinner. Food doesn’t make me feel the chest pain (not burning sensation) or neck pain, only alcohol seems to. I do however get a warm feeling in my stomache sometimes since this occurred, but that’s it.
