The Most Common Ways To Recognize Acid Reflux Disease

The body has an armory of ways to prevent acid reflux disease but if any of these are prevented from occurring the body has very few mechanisms left to alleviate the suffering that is associated with the chronic disease. Most reflux occurs during the daytime, but during the day the top halves of our body are upright meaning that the reflux automatically flows back down to the stomach and any problems are prevented. The mouth constantly creates saliva that contains chemicals that neutralize the effects of reflux and acid on our bodies. Biopsies can be used to search for the existence of cancer. They can not be used to look for evidence of acid reflux disease but alternative causes of symptoms may be found.

Esophageal acid testing is probably the most accurate way to test for acid reflux disease but is the most obtrusive as well. A tube is placed through the nose and into the esophagus where it remains for 24 hours. This tube has a sensor on the end and measures the amount of reflux generated over 24 hours.

An endoscopy is another way of diagnosing acid reflux disease. A tube is swallowed so that doctors can see exactly what is going on inside your body. However, a esophagus of a patient suffering from the disease ordinarily looks quite normal so this method of diagnosis will only directly work for those patients whose esophagus has been damaged by their acid reflux disease. However, if an ulcer or other ailment that can cause similar problems is spotted then it may be possible to discount acid reflux disease.

Heartburn is by far the most common symptom of acid reflux disease and if a doctor suspects your heartburn is cause by acid reflux disease he or she will prescribe you with a medicine that stops the production of acid in your stomach. If it stops then it is assumed that you do indeed have acid reflux disease. This approach of diagnosis can be unreliable.

    I have a “female” question about Premenstrual syndrome and Acid Reflux?
    I am 19 and I was diagnosed about three years ago for having Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and I have a weird menstrual cycle that I’m controlling with birth control and the doctor’s help of course. I live with GERD on a daily basis, I fix my diet around how I feel and sometimes I just get too sick to eat.

    My question is, could premenstrual syndrome make gastroesophageal reflux disease worsen for a few weeks before the menstrual cycle starts?

    I will even take answers from males that have had wives, sisters, girlfriends, or friends or some kind of knowledge of both. I’m not picky. I just want some kind of idea about what’s going on with my body.

    The diet is not the issue. GERD is caused by a weak sphincter muscle where food goes into the stomach. The acid can cause changes in the esophagus that may lead to cancer, so you should try to get a handle on it.

    Avoid eating before lying down or going to bed. If you eat food with high acid content (tomatoes or tomato sauce, for example, or lemons or lemonade), it will make the acid damage worse, but not by a lot.

    Drinking soda (anything that fizzes when you open it, even beer) will make the GERD worse, so aim for water or flavored water or Crystal Light or similar preparations, especially before lying down.

    Raise the head of your mattress (put a pillow under the top end underneath the mattress or buy or make a wedge to put there) so the acid will not get up too far.

    Take something like Pepcid Complete or Prilosec OTC, but understand that they diminish the acid output of cells in the stomach. which will grow more cells to make up the difference, so if you stop, the acid problem will be worse. It’s better to take the Pepcid Complete only when you need it, rather than regularly.

    If you have not had an examination of your esophagus for possible precancerous conditions, you should have one as soon as possible.

    If diet causes heartburn, how come Indians and people who eat spicy food don’t have it constantly?
    Indians eat curry often, obviously it varies from person to person. I’m just wondering, if eating spicy foods or chocolate etc causes heartburn then why don’t the majority of them have heartburn all the time? Is it because they are used to it?

    I suffer for gastroesophageal reflux disease, i do ike curry and dark chocolate, but i didn’t eat it often, so it can’t have caused it…..or can it? What else can cause heartburn?

    i have that problem b4. need to quit smoking if u do, for the nicotine acidic effect or something. that got me to quit smoking too. curry, oily and hot & spicy foods should be avoided, for some time at least. avoid caffein in tea and coffee as well, and carbonated drinks with gas!!.. drink a lot of water. but do get pro advice on your situation if u r having the symptoms

In this way, many GERD sufferers end up on a very restricted diet or end up blaming their symptoms on dietary indiscretion. If avoiding spicy foods and/or other dietary advice helps, that’s great. If it doesn’t, GERD sufferers shouldn’t feel that they are doing something wrong. They should seek medical advice on managing their disease.
    Smoking doesn’t cause GERD and there is little evidence that smoking significantly worsens GERD. Stopping smoking is a good idea anyway..” unquote
