Medication For Reflux - Is There An Effective Alternative To Conventional Drug Based Medication?
If you are one of the unfortunate people who suffer from regular bouts of heartburn caused by acid reflux, you have many different products that you can take that all claim to produce that much needed relief. But with all the various types of medication for reflux available how do you choose which one will give you the best result?
Let's briefly consider the conventional ways that reflux is dealt with.
Antacids - neutralise stomach acids
H2 Inhibitors - reduce the amount of acid your stomach produces
Proton Pump Inhibitors- also reduce stomach acid production but are more effective than H2 Inhibitors
These are the main types of medication that heartburn sufferers can obtain either over-the-counter or on prescription and for most people are the main form of treatment. However, while they do produce that much needed relief there is a rather important flaw in this type of treatment.
All the above mentioned treatments work by controlling the strength or amount of stomach acid that is produced. While this might sound logical given that it is acid reflux that causes all the pain and distress of heartburn, it is not the amount of acid that is the problem for most sufferers.
